This is a very valid question that we’re always happy to answer!
The quick answer is that we use 100% nylon, 6mm (1/4”) solid braid rope.If you’d like a more detailed answer, we go into a lot more detail here.

Well, there are several reasons actually, but the main reason nylon is a great choice for shibari is because it can be dyed in a whole spectrum of colors! Because it’s a synthetic fiber, it also has a much higher breaking strength than any natural fiber rope, so it’s safer for suspensions! And, it’s low-maintenance - easy to clean and care for!
-
We dye every rope by hand using the highest quality dyes that are fabricated specifically for use with synthetic fibers, so each one is color-fast, meaning your ropes won’t bleed or fade with normal use, and the colors will never rub off on you.
-
Nylon rope is exceptionally easy to care for and clean - just put it in a mesh garment bag and throw it in the wash! We recommend whatever laundry detergent you use for your clothing, and no bleach (of course), then simply hang it up to air dry!
-
Ideally, hanging your shibari rope over a closet rod or from a hook is the best way. With natural fiber ropes, storing it coiled can lead to kinks and bends in the rope that aren’t easy to work out and make tying more challenging. Nylon rope isn’t as susceptible to this, but it’s still a good idea to store your rope loosely coiled if hanging isn’t an option. We recommend either a daisy chain-style, or just gently coiled, rather than tightly wound methods.

This is a great question, and one we get often! The truth is, there are a lot of variables that will determine this answer - size and body shape of your partner, complexity of the ties you’re wanting to do, etc.
For shibari beginners we recommend starting with two or three 30’ hanks and expanding from there. As your skills improve, add more rope to your shibari collection!
-
Your privacy is always a priority, of course! Your ropes will be shipped to you in very plain packaging, and the return address is simply listed as “Westland”.

We completely understand that you’re excited to get your shibari rope and start tying, and we’re just as excited to get it to you!
Since every rope is hand-dyed to order, it takes a minimum of 24 hours once you place the order to measure, cut, dye, and dry your shibari rope. We typically ship USPS Priority Mail which means your order usually gets to you within 2-3 business days!
